The Parker River Wildlife Refuge in Newbury, MA is 4,662 acres of diverse landscape and animal habitats.

It was established to preserve the feeding, resting, and nesting areas of migratory birds. If you don’t have a national park pass there is a $5 cash charge at the entrance. You can purchase a season pass for $20 if you plan to come more often.

Sunday was a perfect fall day to visit the Dyke Trail at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island. The colors were spectacular and the trail is very easy to walk – absolutely no elevation!

My daughter Brittany and my granddaughter Emily joined us for the hike. Miss Emily brought along her friend, Munny Bunny.

If you have kids younger than 3 or 4 I would suggest taking a stroller. Dogs and bikes are not allowed on this trail because of the nesting and migrating birds.

We did some hiking at Sandy Point earlier this summer but the Dyke & Hellcat Trails were closed for repairs at the time. Glad we had to wait because the fall colors were breathtaking. If you have the chance take a trip over to Newburyport and walk both the Hellcat & Dyke trails.
I am not an expert birdwatcher but I did recognize gulls, herons, terns, and ducks. There are many different types of shorebirds who rest, nest and migrate to and from the refuge area.
