The Red Rock Conservation Area in West Gloucester is one of the more challenging hikes on Cape Ann but the views from the summit are spectacular. Parking located at intersection of Exit 14 Route 128 and Essex Avenue (Route 133). Parking can be challenging.

We hiked Red Rock in West Gloucester today – notice I said hiked not climbed. because Red Rock is well-known to local rock climbers in the Boston area.
The rock faces have names like “Oz,” “Pink Floyd Wall,” “Stonehenge Boulder,” and the “Master’s Wall.” We stopped and watched them, marveling at how quickly they conquered the vertical climb.

We moved on to our more conventional climb – much safer and didn’t involve ropes and harnesses. This was a short hike – 2 miles in and out – 1.5 hours – lots of roots and rocks, plus some elevation. The fall colors and views were spectacular. Parking can be a problem so plan ahead. There are a few more spots up and across the street at the Sunset Mountain trailhead.
